Sliding Puzzle Strategy: Solve the 15 Puzzle in Fewer Moves
The 15 puzzle looks like pure trial and error at first, but experienced solvers use a consistent method that works every time. Here's how to bring your move count down.
Solve one row at a time, starting from the top
Don't try to place every tile at once. Focus only on getting 1 and 2 into the top-left two spots first, ignoring everything else on the board. Once those two are locked in, move to 3 and 4, and so on. Trying to solve the whole board simultaneously is what causes most of the wasted moves.
Leave the last two tiles of a row for a specific trick
The second-to-last and last tile in a row (or column) can't just be slid directly into place — you'll often need to place them temporarily in the wrong spots one row down, then rotate them into position together. This is the single technique that separates people who "get stuck near the end" from people who don't.
Solve the top rows and left columns first, then finish in an L-shape
Once the top two rows and left two columns are done, what's left is a smaller 2x2-ish puzzle that solves the same way, just at a smaller scale. Thinking of the full grid as "shrinking" after each row keeps the problem from feeling overwhelming.
Why some shuffles feel impossible — and actually are
